About

CanReview is a pan-Canadian collaboration supported by the Accelerating Clinical Trials (ACTConsortium to enable a single research ethics review for multi-site clinical trials conducted across Canada. Working together with Research Ethics Boards, research teams, Indigenous community members, institutions and sponsors, patients and family partners and many others, we will co-develop a system that will:

  • Improve efficiencies and study start-up times
  • Increase Canada’s competitiveness in attracting global clinical trials
  • Expand clinical trials to underserved, rural and remote locations
  • Improve equitable access to trial participation

A Framework for All

CanReview will provide research teams and sponsors with a common ethics review entry point and consistent requirements by leveraging Stream, an adaptable web-based platform for single research ethics review that has managed more than 2,800 multi-site studies and supported nearly 12,000 users since 2015.

CanReview is more than a platform. It is a collaborative framework committed to engaging the clinical trials community and REBs across Canada, establishing proactive mechanisms, publicly reporting approval timelines, and advocating to evolve legislature so that, together, we can achieve a broadly accessible single research ethics review system for Canada.

The Selection Process

As part of ACT Canada’s mandate to improve the ecosystem for conducting clinical trials in Canada, an open competition was held to select a group to set up and run a sustainable pan-Canadian, distributive, single REB review and approval process with strict timelines for the initiation and conduct of multicentre RCTs in Canada.

A review panel representing jurisdictions across Canada and internationally was established to independently evaluate proposals. Proposals were scored independently and anonymously, ensuring an objective and impartial process. The Selection Committee’s final decision was consistent with the scoring and was unanimous, and CanReview was selected as the group to drive this important initiative forward.

“It has been a privilege to co-chair the rigorous review process for these groundbreaking proposals. CanReview’s approach marks an important step toward a single, national REB that will streamline research ethics reviews, enhancing Canada’s competitiveness in innovative research for the benefit of all Canadians. We look forward to seeing how CanReview’s system will reduce duplication, support diverse communities, and foster nationwide collaboration. We have firsthand experience of single coordinated research ethics services, in the UK and the US, and so we know the transformative impact this can have for Canadian researchers and patients alike.”
